The discussion of last nights news was, "Do you call it 'Two-Thousand-Ten' or 'Twenty-Ten'"?
"Twenty-Ten", I say.
I've been waiting for it to be Two Thousand Ten for the past decade. My thing is, do we call it "The Teen's" or just refer to it still as the year?
Do we call this interim between the single digits in the century and the teens "the tweens?" or do we just say "Twenty-Eleven and "Twenty-Twelve"?
Unique as it is from the perspective of someone who has not lived in the last century with phrases like "Face of the Eighties" or "The Seventies" the whole aspect of learning to call a group of years by a generic name is something that I learned to do right off the bat.
I mean, when you're born in the later half of a century, you get a perspective that people who are less than between fifteen and twenty can't really wrap their heads around because their point of awareness came about after this centuries Genesis.
So what do you call it?
Good question hua?
It was all suppose to come to a crashing end ten years ago when we went from 1900's to 2000. Everything was supposed to stop: Computers, airplanes, trains, roller-coasters, doctors, rhino's, kidney's, snow, puppies, fish, origami and etc…..
But we woke up and the sun rose and the computers all worked and there were puppies and kittens, airplanes that flew, rollercoaster's that coasted and doctors that doctored and rhino's that looked like leather- and your kidney hopefully was still functioning and the snow fell and a host of people were doing origami. Computers blinked and went "Okay, 2000 (they are like children and we expect so little of them) and all was well with the world for at least a year and a half.
But then we were stuck with the problem of "What do you call this first decade of the century?" We've never had this problem. This is a problem that is a century old…When your great grandmother gave birth to your grandmother in 1903. What do you call it? You have to call it "The Turn of the Century," Just like your great grandmother did, but with the epilate of "The Turn of the 21st century".
So here we are.
2010.
2010!
2010?
2010.
